Natural Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
According to WebMD, there are around 58 million people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, also commonly known as IBS. Some symptoms of IBS may be cramping, bloating, constipation, and lower abdominal pain. If you suspect that you are suffering from IBS a visit to a medical professional is important as the symptoms of IBS may also be caused by another medical problem.
If you are diagnosed with having IBS, your doctor may recommend natural remedies before prescription medication. While medication such as antidepressants and anti-diarrheals may be prescribed, most sufferers find the greatest relief with homemade remedies coupled with lifestyle changes.
Modifying your diet is an easy and natural way to manage IBS. Healthy foods are a must for everyone but special attention should be given to foods that are high in fiber. Fiber helps to regulate the digestive system resulting in regular bowel movements. The action of the fiber on the bowel provides much needed relief to many suffering from IBS. If you must, fiber supplements can be taken but it is better to consume fiber naturally found in a large number of foods. These foods include fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain foods, such as oatmeal, bulgur and cereals.
Many individuals with this condition may find it necessary to stay away from certain foods. If you are noticing a pattern in your pain and discomfort after consuming certain food or drink, these items should be eliminated from the diet. Some common triggering foods may be alcohol, beans or even coffee/caffeinated drinks. In addition, regular consumption of water, around eight glasses a day is also advised.
There are a number of natural remedies that can result in relief from the pain often associated with IBS. Surprisingly, one of those remedies is exercise. In addition to walking or running, stretching and/or light massage may provide many individuals with relief.
Laxatives may or may not help. Many individuals confuse laxatives with fiber supplements, but they are not the same.. Laxatives may temporarily relieve the feeling of constipation, but they are not a permanent fix. In fact, too many laxatives can have a negative impact on the body, which could lead to additional problems.
Usually there is no cure for IBS, but the pain, bloating and cramping may be lessened or even eliminated with the use of both natural remedies as well as diet and lifestyle changes. Remember
In my Kinesiology clinic I find that Psyllium capsules help initially to get more fibre into the diet and help the bowel eliminate. Also probiotics and food enzymes can help. A full kinesiology treatment will encompass emotional triggers and stress release, chemical sensitivies such as food and drink, electro magnetic triggers and physical and structural effects on the body.
Excellent suggestions. The lifestyle changes, though a must, do not have to be as drastic as many people imagine. Gluten, processed sugar and lactose (in dairy products) are inflammatory to many people’s digestive tracts, so it’s wise to experiment and see which, if any, of these create problems. It’s also wise not only to avoid certain foods, but to ingest others that are beneficial. Fermented foods such as ciders, vinegars and pickles can provide your body with extra bacteria helpful to digestion. These same bacteria can be consumed as probiotics, in the form of pills or fortified yogurts, to aid in receiving adequate levels.
